Yap, Micronesia 1
Yap, called Wa'ab by the residents, is known for its large stone money and its
manta rays.
The stone money is still in use today and is proudly displayed on village stone
money banks and in front of the traditional men's house. Divers can also come upon the stone money underwater. How it got there remains
a mystery as folktales are told of the stone money being dumped in the water
after a village raid or that it was accidentally dropped from the boat while
transporting the stone money to another village.
