Yap, Micronesia 3
Built hundreds of years ago, stone paths connect each village to the next and is
maintained by the villages respectively. When visiting a village, it is
customary to hold a branch of leaves or carry a basket as a show of good
intentions. Each village has a men's house where the men would
traditionally meet to discuss the day's fishing plans as well as to handle
village affairs. In earlier times, there was also a women's house
located outside the village where young girls would go for three months once
they reached puberty. Here they were taught life by the elder women of the
village.
